Super Bowl LIX payouts: How much do players really earn?

The Super Bowl is the pinnacle of the NFL season, with players competing not just for the championship but also for substantial financial rewards.

While the focus is often on the Lombardi Trophy, every player who takes the field—whether on the winning or losing team—receives a significant payout.

The earnings are dictated by the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which outlines structured bonus payments for postseason games.

The latest CBA, signed in 2020, ensures a steady increase in payouts, rewarding both winners and runners-up.

These payments are not uniform, as various factors—such as tenure and roster status—determine how much each player takes home.

Super Bowl LIX winner’s payout

Every player on the victorious team will receive $171,000 for winning the Super Bowl, an increase of $7,000 from the previous year.

This amount is set to rise further, with winners of the 2026 Super Bowl expected to earn $178,000.

These bonuses come in addition to standard player salaries, endorsement deals, and other contractual incentives.

The financial boost for players is significant, particularly for those in the middle or lower tiers of the league’s salary structure.

Not all players receive the same amount.

Those who have been on the active or inactive roster for at least three games in the regular season or playoffs are eligible for the full bonus.

Any player who has played in at least eight games—regardless of whether they suit up for the Super Bowl—also qualifies for the full payout.

Meanwhile, veteran players who suffered injuries but remain under contract with the team are entitled to the same amount.

What do runners-up earn?

While missing out on the championship stings, the financial consolation is not insignificant.

Each player on the losing team in Super Bowl LIX will receive $96,000, an increase from previous seasons.

Next year’s runners-up will see their earnings climb to $103,000 per player.

Similar to the winning team, these payments are subject to conditions.

Players who were active for at least three games during the regular season or playoffs receive the full amount.

Those who participated in between three and seven games but were not on the Super Bowl roster receive half the payment.

First-year players who were injured but remain under contract qualify for partial compensation.

How much do NFL players earn overall?

The Super Bowl bonus is part of a structured system that rewards players for each postseason round.

Those who participate in the Wild Card round earn $46,500, while players in the Divisional Round take home $50,500.

The payout increases to $73,000 for those competing in the Conference Championship.

For teams that make it to the Super Bowl, the cumulative earnings from all postseason games can be significant, particularly for players with lower base salaries.

This structured payment system ensures that all players—whether they are high-profile stars or special teams contributors—receive financial recognition for their role in the season’s biggest game.

As the NFL continues to expand its revenue streams through media rights deals and sponsorships, these postseason bonuses are expected to increase in the coming years.
