AWS outage causes widespread internet disruptions across the US

Thousands of users in the United States reported widespread disruptions on Monday after Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered outages that affected multiple platforms and applications.

The issues, which began early in the morning, hit both consumers and businesses relying on AWS for cloud computing, storage, and application hosting.

According to outage tracker DownDetector, reports surged past 14,000 by 3:44 am ET, causing major interruptions across websites, gaming networks, and mobile services.

AWS outage triggers disruption across key digital services

The outage primarily affected users trying to access Amazon’s main site and connected platforms.

DownDetector data showed that 53% of users faced problems with the mobile app, while 26% encountered issues with the homepage.

A further 22% reported disruptions in the shopping cart feature.

The cloud division of Amazon supports a vast ecosystem of online operations, including media streaming, online retail, logistics tracking, and gaming.

As a result, even short outages can cause cascading effects across industries dependent on AWS infrastructure.

Coinbase and Robinhood said their services were being affected by the AWS outage, while Perplexity reported that the disruption had impacted the stability of its website.

Other platforms, including gaming sites Roblox and Fortnite, as well as corporate messaging service Slack, also saw a spike in user complaints that may be linked to the AWS issue, according to data from Down Detector.

Users take to social media as AWS status fluctuates

Reports of the disruption spread quickly on X (formerly Twitter) and the DownDetector comment page.

Social media users began sharing screenshots and updates as the issue unfolded.

User @20wenty_ compiled a list of affected games and websites, highlighting the broad scope of the outage.

Another user, John R. Eakin (@JREakin), noted that the AWS service status temporarily dropped to “Degraded” before returning to “Impacted.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Frog (@TheMisterFrog) confirmed that the root of the issue was indeed linked to Amazon Web Services.

Some users also pointed out the global nature of the incident.

Delivery and education services among those impacted

Beyond e-commerce and entertainment, the outage also disrupted several essential services, including delivery platforms and education systems that rely on AWS.

Multiple university IT departments confirmed interruptions to their Canvas portals, leaving students temporarily unable to access coursework.

Delivery operations connected to Amazon’s logistics network were also affected.

Reports on DownDetector indicated issues with Amazon Relay, which drivers use for managing freight deliveries, suggesting possible slowdowns in shipments and scheduling.

The incident additionally raised questions about the availability of Amazon Flex, the company’s app for gig-delivery workers.

As AWS underpins a wide range of Amazon’s digital services—from smart home devices and Kindle e-books to Prime Music and Prime Video streaming—the outage likely caused interruptions across these interconnected systems.

Amazon Web Services’ role in the global digital ecosystem

Amazon Web Services is one of the world’s largest providers of cloud computing, powering millions of websites, applications, and backend systems.

Its infrastructure hosts services for businesses, developers, and consumers globally.

Any technical interruption in AWS operations can impact a wide range of online services that rely on its servers for storage and performance.

The latest outage underscores how critical AWS has become to Amazon’s wider business model — and to the internet at large.

Although the cause of Monday’s outage was not immediately disclosed, the event highlights the fragility of dependence on centralised cloud providers.
