Trump moves nuclear submarines near Russia: what triggered the move and what’s ahead

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to regions near Russia as a direct response to what he described as “highly provocative statements” made by Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

Trump emphasized the seriousness of the move on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that words carry great weight and can lead to unintended consequences, expressing hope that this deployment would not escalate into conflict.

Donald Trump said:

Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” the US President added.

What triggered America’s move?

The triggering remarks came from Medvedev, who recently made inflammatory comments implying Russia’s readiness to maintain and possibly supply nuclear capabilities to other countries, including a suggestion about nuclear warheads potentially being supplied to Iran.

Medvedev posted statements emphasizing ongoing enrichment of nuclear material and the future production of nuclear weapons, which Trump viewed as reckless provocations.

Medvedev also warned Trump against issuing ultimatums, cautioning that they represent threats pushing toward conflict, not only between Russia and Ukraine but also internally within the US, indirectly criticizing then-President Joe Biden as “Sleepy Joe”.

Trump’s decision to move US nuclear submarines closer to Russia is raising eyebrows, signaling a clear uptick in military tension.

The subs are likely Ohio-class, massive, nearly silent, and capable of launching nuclear missiles without warning.

Trump has spoken admiringly of them in the past, often pointing to their advanced technology and saying they’re unmatched when it comes to stealth and firepower.

How this can go horribly wrong?

The US military’s decision to move nuclear submarines closer to Russian waters hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it’s already setting off alarm bells in diplomatic circles.

It’s a risky move, one that brings two nuclear powers uncomfortably close, not just in geography, but in posture.

There’s nothing subtle about this. These aren’t just any submarines; they’re likely the Ohio-class ballistic missile subs, the kind designed to deliver a devastating nuclear response while remaining nearly invisible beneath the surface.

Putting them near Russian territory ramps up the chances of misreading intentions or worse, a deadly mistake.

This spike in tension comes as former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev continues to hurl aggressive warnings toward the West.

His recent suggestion that Russia might supply nuclear weapons to countries like Iran took things to a whole new level, and Washington’s military response seems just as provocative.

It’s not hard to see how this could spiral. Russia has options: more nuclear drills, more saber-rattling, or shifting its own strategic forces into new positions.
